Gerold Miller draws on the reflections of Conceptual Art of the 1960s on the nature of art, developing them in a personal direction that gives the concept a concrete, rigorous, and also aesthetic form. Since 1991, he has explored the relationship between idea, artwork, space, and environment, working across the boundaries between painting and sculpture, two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, artwork and frame.

His works, mainly made of aluminium, lacquer, enamel, and granite, are characterised by essential geometries, lines, overlaps, and angular cuts, in which form and colour coexist without one dominating the other. Their polished, technological surfaces evoke the contemporary world while also reclaiming aesthetic pleasure and the possibility of beauty, moving beyond the anti-aesthetic rigor of the conceptual and Minimalist traditions. Miller’s practice therefore focuses on the boundary, understood not as a separation but as a space of connection: between painting and sculpture, form and colour, positive and negative space, artwork and environment, reality and illusion. His works alter the perception of space and engage the viewer in an experience that is analytical yet deeply sensory. The sculptures from the Verstärker (“Amplifiers”) series reflect this same approach: minimal structures that define the three dimensions of space and, through their reflective surfaces, incorporate their surrounding environment. The artwork is therefore not an isolated object, but becomes an active part of the space around it.

Throughout more than thirty years of practice, Miller has maintained a rigorous analytical approach while continuously exploring new possibilities. His work brings together Conceptual Art, Minimalism, and the study of perception, transforming geometric rigor into an open aesthetic experience in which artwork, space, and viewer enter into dialogue.
