THOMAS BERRA_Desio, 1986
Thomas Berra studied at the Accademia di Belle di Brera in Milan where he graduated in Painting. The starting point of his artistic practice is rooted in the research of the vegetal and dream world. He consistently portrays out of the ordinary herbaria and in particular focuses on so-called vagabond plants. The plant universe becomes the backdrop for mystical landscapes, animated by fairytale subjects. Man and nature are one in perfect communion. Wandering herbs, commonly called weeds, those messy, abandoned, forgotten plants that grow without a place of belonging, take over man’s spaces by coexisting with what surrounds them and manifesting their presence. For Berra, the beloved wandering herbs are an allegory of resistance and resilience. They make their way through urban structures demonstrating their skilled ability to adapt and survive. Metaphor of strength and subtle analysis on the need for inclusion and the importance of defending differences. For Berra, one of the key objectives of his journey is precisely to analyze the relationship between the subjects and the environment because that is where the mystery lies and its revelation takes place. It is there that the unconscious releases true beauty, the one hidden beyond apparent reality. Berra conducts his research through painting, which he considers a political and revolutionary act in a world where we are overloaded with installations and artificial materials.
